Adding wifi to a fixed desktop machine is not something you consider until you have the need, but as luck would have it those nice chaps at Netgear are way ahead of you, the Netgear WG121 USB wireless adaptor brings the benefits of wireless networking to your USB enabled machine. The WG121 uses the most up to date wireless technology in the 802.11g 54mbit standard and combining this with the later USB 2.0 connection, together these give a fast throughput making the most of your wireless router or access point. Connecting to your PC is easy enough as long as your windows operating system is 98 and above the smart wizard install application makes the loading of drivers and configuration of the WG121 simple and the near 2 meter USB cable is generous allowing you to position the unit freely. In practice the Netgear WG121 will go though a few walls and still give an effective range of about 30 - 50ft with a good full signal strength in the average home, the wep encryption seemed to add very little overhead and didn't noticeably effect connection speeds, we did find that the wep switched itself off each time the WG121 was rebooted its thought that a patch is due from Netgear for this annoyance shortly. Having said this the Netgear unit worked with all the PC USB slots we tried without fuss getting us online in the a matter of minutes overall it does what it says |
